Sander Chan

Dr. Chan has coordinated several international projects, including: 

  • Achieving High Integrity Voluntary Climate Action: This Horizon Europe-funded project aims to identify opportunities to enhance and scale up voluntary climate action, targeting a worldwide net-zero society by 2050.
  • Climate Cities Recovery (CCR): Funded by the Volkswagen Stiftung, this project examines the resilience of cities’ climate actions amid crises, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic. The research underscores the importance of early engagement and health co-benefits in maintaining climate action.
  • Strengthening Non-state Climate Action in the Global South (ClimateSouth): Supported by the Europe and Global Challenges joint funding initiative, this project seeks to boost the participation and leadership of developing countries in global climate governance. It highlights the need for equitable distribution of climate action benefits and stresses the significance of local contexts for the success of climate initiatives.

Dr. Chan’s work integrates diverse actors and innovative approaches across multiple disciplines to promote sustainable development, climate resilience, and environmental integrity. His research aims to provide a more inclusive and effective framework for global environmental governance. S. Chan is a co-PI and leads the development of N-CID in Work Package (WP) 1

Biography

Sander Chan is a political scientist with expertise in global environmental governance, climate action, and biodiversity conservation. He serves as an assistant professor at the Department of Geography, Spatial Planning, and the Environment at Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands, and is also an associated researcher at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS). Dr. Chan's research focuses on the involvement of various societal actors in climate governance, sustainable development, and public-private partnerships. He explores the orchestration of transnational action and corporate voluntary environmental behavior, emphasizing collaborative and transnational efforts to address climate change and biodiversity loss.
